When our magazine received an official invitation to visit Slovenia, the familiar question popped into my head: “What can a small country in the heart of Europe, on the tourist map, possibly offer?”

But as soon as our plane landed in the capital, Ljubljana, I realised I wasn’t standing before just another tourist destination, but rather a “warm European secret”—a captivating blend that seamlessly combines the splendour of Swiss nature, the richness of Italian history, and the tranquillity of the Austrian countryside, all within an unparalleled sustainable lifestyle.

Ljubljana: The Capital That Smiles at Strangers We began our journey in Ljubljana, one of Europe’s smallest and most vibrant capital cities. What makes this city special is its car-free historic centre, offering a wonderful opportunity to explore on foot among its landmarks that blend Baroque and modern architecture.

Sipping speciality coffee on the banks of the Ljubljana River, which flows gracefully through the city, and admiring unique landmarks like the Dragon Bridge, creates a sense of tranquillity. As you ascend the funicular railway to the historic Ljubljana Castle, the entire city unfolds before you like a vibrant oil painting.

Lake Bled: Where Legend Comes True If you think Instagram-worthy promotional photos are exaggerated, Lake Bled will change your mind completely. It’s a place that looks like it came straight out of a fairytale book.

We took a traditional wooden boat called a “pletna” to reach the small, secluded island in the middle of the lake, where we visited the historic church and rang the famous wishing bell. The views are breathtaking and unforgettable, with the towering, cloud-clad Alps surrounding the crystal-clear turquoise waters. And no visit is complete without trying the traditional cream cake (kremšnita) at one of the lakeside cafes.

An Adventure Deep in the Earth: Postojna Cave Then we embarked on a completely different experience, as our journey took us to Postojna Cave, one of the world’s largest karst cave systems. Riding a small electric train for kilometres deep underground, while admiring the stalactites and stalagmites that have formed over millions of years, felt like a trip to another planet. It’s a geological marvel that inspires awe at the Creator’s magnificence.
